Bulk sand is not priced per cube. It is priced per truck. Once you understand that, the numbers stop looking random.

Real figures we found from South African suppliers this year:
- Cape Town supplier, delivery included: 1 cube R750, 3 cube R1,550, 6 cube R1,650
- Bulk supplier with a 3m³ minimum: around R912 a cube, so about R2,736 for the load
- Gauteng merchant: 6 metre load around R2,150 to R2,750
- Larger 12m and 16m loads: the per-cube rate keeps falling, to roughly R440 a cube
Look at the Cape Town line again. Going from 3 cubes to 6 cubes costs about R100 more and doubles the sand. That is not a mistake. The truck is already coming.
Why the per-cube rate collapses on bigger loads
Sand is cheap and delivery is not. On a one cube drop, most of what you pay is the vehicle, the driver and the fuel. On a six cube drop, the same fixed cost is spread over six times the material.
Choosing between the 3 meter plaster sand price and a 6 cube load
The honest answer is that 3 cubes is often the worst value on the price list. Ask three questions.
- Will you actually use it? Sand keeps indefinitely if kept dry and covered.
- Where does it go? Six cubes is a serious heap. It needs a spot you can lose for weeks.
- Can the truck get in? A six cube tipper needs room to reverse and lift its bed.
If all three are yes, take the bigger load. If your driveway is narrow or the site is tight, 3 cubes on a smaller vehicle may be the only option regardless of price.
How much wall these loads plaster
Using a working figure of 50 to 70 m² of wall per cube:
- 3 cubes: roughly 150 to 210 m² of plastered wall
- 6 cubes: roughly 300 to 420 m²

Delivery, access and the things that go wrong
Most of the complaints about bulk sand are not about the sand.
- The truck cannot reach the tip spot and the load lands in the street
- Overhead cables or low branches stop the bed lifting
- Nobody is on site and the driver dumps it in the wrong place
- The heap blocks the driveway for the length of the job
- Rain soaks it and every mix after that is wrong
Fixing any of these afterwards means paying labour to barrow sand across a property, which quietly wipes out the saving you made by buying in bulk.
Before the truck arrives
- Mark the tip spot with something the driver cannot miss
- Move cars, bins and anything else in the reversing line
- Put boards or plastic down if the spot is paved or lawn
- Have a tarpaulin and something to weigh it down
- Be on site, or have someone who is
When bulk is the wrong call
