Picture-Hanging, Shelving & Mounting: When to Call a Handyman

A furniture assembly handyman does more than build flat-pack. The same visit usually covers TV mounting, shelving, curtain rails, mirrors and blinds – anything that has to be assembled or fixed to a wall.

The assembly is the easy part. What separates a good job from a failure is the fixing: the right anchor for the right wall, rated for the right load.

What a furniture assembly handyman actually does

Most jobs in this category fall into four groups, and they are almost always booked together.

  • Flat-pack assembly: wardrobes, beds, desks, storage systems, exercise equipment
  • Wall mounting: TVs, sound bars, mirrors, artwork
  • Shelving: floating shelves, bracket shelves, alcove and garage shelving
  • Window treatments: curtain rails, tracks, blinds, pelmets

Booking them as one list is far cheaper than one at a time, since every visit carries its own call-out charge. Our handyman services Cape Town list shows what else fits into the same slot.

Know your wall before you drill

This is the whole job. Get the wall type wrong and the fixing pulls out, usually with the shelf still attached.

Solid brick or block

The most common wall type in South African homes. Drills with a hammer action, produces reddish or grey dust, and sounds solid when tapped.

  • Nylon wall plugs with the matching screw for light loads
  • Frame or hammer fixings for medium loads
  • Sleeve or expansion anchors for heavy loads such as TV brackets

Drywall or plasterboard

Sounds hollow, drills easily, produces white dust. Increasingly common in newer builds, partitions and converted spaces.

  • Never use a plain nylon plug – it spins and pulls straight through
  • Self-drive plasterboard anchors for light items
  • Toggle or spring toggle fixings for medium loads
  • Fix into the stud for anything heavy – find it, do not guess

Plastered walls with a hollow behind

Dry-lined masonry looks solid but has a void behind the board. A plug set into the plaster alone holds almost nothing. Drill through to the masonry and use a longer fixing.

Load ratings: the part most people skip

Every fixing has a rated load, and that rating assumes correct installation in the wall type it was designed for.

  • Count the fixings, not the shelf – four anchors share the load, but only if all four are sound
  • Allow for leverage – a deep shelf or a swing-arm TV bracket multiplies the pull-out force at the top fixings
  • Derate in drywall – the same anchor holds a fraction of what it does in brick
  • Think about what goes on it – books and crockery are far heavier than they look

The most common failure is a shelf sized for its appearance rather than its contents. A metre of paperbacks weighs more than most people expect. Building regulations and permit rules for your property are published by the City of Cape Town.

TV mounting: the details that matter

TV mounting is the highest-risk job in this category, because failure destroys the TV and can injure someone.

  1. Confirm the VESA pattern matches the bracket
  2. Locate services first – cables and pipes run in walls, often vertically above sockets
  3. Fix into masonry or a stud, never into plasterboard alone for a large screen
  4. Set the height for seated eye level, not standing
  5. Plan the cables before drilling – surface trunking or chased in

Standard mounting for a screen up to 55 inches runs about R800 to R1,500. Large screens, difficult walls or concealed cabling push it to R1,500 to R3,000. Note that chasing new power into a wall is electrical work and needs a registered electrician, a boundary covered in our guide to handyman services and their limits.

What assembly and mounting cost

These jobs are usually quoted per item or per hour rather than as a package.

  • Flat-pack furniture assembly: R600 to R2,000 depending on complexity and size
  • TV wall mounting: R800 to R1,500 standard, up to R3,000 for complex installs
  • Picture and mirror hanging: commonly billed hourly, around R600 an hour
  • Shelf installation: R250 to R600 per shelf
  • General handyman labour: R300 to R650 an hour, plus a R350 to R950 call-out or minimum

Because a single item barely covers the minimum charge, batching matters more here than almost anywhere. Six items in one visit is dramatically cheaper than six visits, as our handyman rates comparison sets out.

How to prepare before the visit

  • Unbox everything and check the parts against the manual
  • Decide exactly where each item goes – deciding on the day burns paid time
  • Clear the wall and the floor space
  • Have the brackets and fixings on hand, or say upfront that they must be supplied
  • Mention the wall type when you book, especially if it is drywall
  • Flag anything unusually heavy so the right anchors are brought

Mentioning drywall up front is the single most useful thing you can do. It changes which fixings get brought and avoids a second trip.

See our handyman services for the full scope, or send us your list with the wall types noted. Assessments are free and we do not charge a call-out fee.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a handyman charge to assemble furniture?

Flat-pack furniture assembly typically runs R600 to R2,000 per item set in 2026, depending on size and complexity. Some services bill hourly instead, around R300 to R650 an hour plus a call-out or minimum charge of R350 to R950. Batching several items into one visit is much cheaper.

How much does it cost to mount a TV on a wall in South Africa?

Standard wall mounting for a screen up to 55 inches costs about R800 to R1,500. Large screens, awkward wall types or cabling concealed inside the wall run R1,500 to R3,000. Cape Town price guides commonly quote around R800 for a straightforward installation on a solid wall.

What fixings should I use for shelves in a drywall?

Never a plain nylon wall plug – it spins and pulls through. Use self-drive plasterboard anchors for light items and toggle or spring toggle fixings for medium loads. For anything heavy, including a TV bracket, locate the stud and fix into it rather than relying on the board.

How do I know if my wall is brick or drywall?

Tap it. Brick and block sound solid and dull, drywall sounds hollow. Drilling confirms it: masonry needs hammer action and produces reddish or grey dust, while drywall drills easily and produces white dust. Watch out for dry-lined masonry, which sounds hollow but has brick behind the void.

Can a handyman mount a TV and run the cables?

A handyman can mount the TV and conceal existing cables in surface trunking or a chase. Running a new electrical point behind the TV is different: new circuits and new plug points are electrical work that must be done by a registered electrician who can issue a certificate of compliance.
