Paving prices in Cape Town run R390 to R680 per square metre installed in 2026, covering bricks, labour and the extras. That is the all-in figure published by PavingPros for South African residential work, and it matches what Cape Town homeowners are quoted.
Most pages you find quote either Gauteng rates or a retailer’s brick price with no labour in it. This guide gives the installed number, per material, and shows where the money actually goes.
Paving prices per square metre by material
The material you pick sets the band. Site conditions decide where inside the band you land.
- Concrete bevel pavers (50mm): R380 to R550 per m2 installed
- Interlocking concrete pavers (60 to 80mm): R420 to R650 per m2
- Simulated or cast-stone cobble: R500 to R750 per m2
- Clay brick pavers: R550 to R800 per m2
- Natural stone and flagstone: R850 to R1,500 per m2
Those are Fonster’s 2026 Western Cape installed ranges. Grouped more simply, concrete paving lands around R330 to R650 per m2, brick paving around R385 to R800, and stone around R500 upwards.
Sources do differ. SmartStone puts concrete bevels and interlockers at R250 to R350 per m2 supplied and installed excluding VAT, with large concrete slabs at R350 to R500. Northern Paving quotes R250 to R450 for concrete in Johannesburg. ProCompare gives R400 to R700 nationally.
Why the published ranges disagree
Three reasons, and all three matter when you compare quotes.
- VAT. Some rates exclude it, some include it. Fifteen percent on R500 is R75 per m2.
- Base preparation. The cheaper published rates often assume a sound existing base. Full excavation is a separate cost.
- Region. Johannesburg rates are consistently quoted lower than Western Cape rates and should not be used to budget a Cape Town job.
What sits inside the rate
A proper installed square-metre rate covers the whole build-up, not just the paver you can see.
- Excavation and spoil removal to the required depth
- Sub-base layer of crusher run, placed and machine-compacted in layers
- Bedding sand screeded to an even depth
- The pavers plus laying in the agreed pattern, including cuts
- Edge restraints set in concrete haunching
- Jointing sand swept in and a final plate compaction
Roughly 40 to 50 percent of a paving quote is the paver itself. The rest is preparation and labour. That is why a cheaper brick saves less than people expect, and why the invisible half is where cheap quotes get cheap. Paver strength classes and laying guidance come from the Concrete Manufacturers Association.
Labour and material split
PavingPros breaks the average job down as R120 to R200 per m2 for bricks, R100 to R200 per m2 for labour, and R80 to R180 per m2 for extra materials such as cement and bedding sand. Delivery adds R1,200 to R5,700 in total within about 125km of the supplier.
SmartStone prices installation on its own at R150 to R200 per m2 for bevels and interlockers, rising to R250 to R300 for large concrete slabs, which are heavier and slower to bed. For a breakdown of the brick component alone, see our paving bricks prices guide.
What a whole job costs
Per-square-metre rates are hard to picture, so here are typical Western Cape project totals for 2026.
- Single-car driveway, about 40 m2, cement pavers: R18,000 to R30,000
- Double driveway, 60 to 80 m2, cement pavers: R28,000 to R55,000
- Double driveway in clay brick: R45,000 to R70,000
Small areas cost more per square metre than large ones. Setting up, moving plant and mobilising a team costs the same whether the job is 15 m2 or 80 m2, so a small patio carries that overhead across fewer metres. If you are weighing that up, our guide to paving services near me is worth a read.
Extras that move the price
- Thickness: roughly R20 per m2 more for every extra 10mm of paver
- Colour: about R15 per m2 above plain grey
- Special shapes: R160 to R180 per m2 extra
- Beneficiated or textured finishes: R40 to R150 per m2 extra
- Difficult access: wheelbarrowing instead of tipping adds labour hours
Slope, drainage falls and poor soil also push a job upward. On a wet Cape Town clay site the base has to be deeper, and that shows up as excavation and crusher run, not as a fancier brick. If you are weighing that up, our guide to paving patterns is worth a read.
Reading a paving quote properly
Compare quotes on the part you cannot see afterwards. Ask for the excavation depth, the sub-base material and thickness, whether compaction is machine done in layers, and how the edges are restrained. If you are weighing that up, our guide to concrete paving cape town is worth a read.
A quote that says only “supply and lay paving, R420/m2” tells you nothing about whether the surface will still be flat in three winters. Our concrete pavers guide explains which paver suits which use, and the paving brick coverage maths shows how to sanity-check the quantities on the quote.
Where to spend and where to save
- Never save on the base. Relaying a failed driveway costs more than doing it once.
- Save on colour, not on thickness. Grey is cheaper and 60mm on a driveway is not optional.
- Buy the pavers as part of the contract so breakages and shortfalls are the contractor’s problem.
- Get the falls right first time. Water running toward the house is expensive to fix later.

Paving prices: the short version
If you take one thing from this guide on paving prices, make it this: get the scope written down before anyone starts. Most disputes about paving prices come from an unclear brief, not bad work.
We quote paving prices properly, in writing, after seeing the job. Assessment is free and there is no call-out fee on quoted work.
Frequently asked questions
How much is paving per m2 in South Africa?
Between R390 and R680 per square metre installed in 2026, including bricks, labour and extras. Concrete pavers sit at the lower end from about R380, clay brick runs R550 to R800, and natural stone reaches R850 to R1,500. Published ranges differ because some exclude VAT and some assume an existing base. There is more detail in our piece on cement paving slabs price.
How much is paving labour per sqm?
Installation on its own is roughly R100 to R200 per square metre for standard concrete bevels and interlockers. Large concrete slabs cost more to lay, around R250 to R300 per square metre, because they are heavy and need a more accurate bed. Labour is normally 50 to 60 percent of the total once base preparation is included. Our guide to walkway paving cape town goes into this properly.
How much does it cost to pave 50 square meters?
At R390 to R680 per square metre installed, 50 m2 comes to roughly R19,500 to R34,000 in 2026. Small areas sit toward the top of that band because setup, plant hire and mobilisation are fixed costs spread over fewer metres. A driveway of that size in clay brick would cost more again.
What is the average labor cost for paving per square meter in South Africa?
Around R100 to R200 per square metre for the laying itself on standard concrete pavers. That figure normally excludes excavation and base work, which are quoted separately or bundled into an all-in rate. Ask the contractor to state which model the quote uses, because an all-in rate and a laying-only rate are not comparable.
How much to charge per sqm for paving?
Contractors in the Western Cape work off R390 to R680 per square metre all-in for residential paving in 2026, adjusted for material, access and base condition. Anything materially below that band usually means shallow excavation, no compacted sub-base or no concrete edge restraint, which is where paving fails first.
