Paving Bricks Prices in Cape Town: What You’ll Pay

September 20, 2026 · I.B.S Construction
Close-up of grey pavers laid beside a planted bed — paving bricks prices

Paving bricks prices in South Africa start at about R3.00 to R3.70 a brick for standard grey 50mm units, which works out to roughly R150 to R190 per square metre supplied only. Coloured and thicker bricks cost more.

That is the supply figure. It is not what paving costs, and confusing the two is the most common budgeting mistake. This page covers the brick price itself, then shows what installation adds on top.

Paving bricks prices per unit at the major retailers

These are current listed South African retail prices for common formats.

  • Grey plain pave brick, 50mm: around R3.65 each at Cashbuild
  • Bevelled edge paver, grey 50mm: around R3.29 at Builders
  • Bevelled paver, charcoal 50mm: around R3.39 at Builders
  • Interlocking paver, grey 60mm: around R3.00 to R3.29
  • Bevel paver, red 50mm: around R5.30 at Cashbuild
  • Bevel paver, colour 50mm: around R4.80

With 50 bricks to the square metre on a standard 200 x 100 x 50mm bevel, R3.29 a brick is about R165 per m2, and R5.30 a brick is about R265 per m2. The colour choice alone can move the material bill by R100 per m2.

Per square metre supply rates

PavingPros publishes supply-only rates by brick type, which line up with the per-unit numbers above.

  • Bevel paver 50mm, grey: R150 to R162 per m2
  • Bevel paver 50mm, colour: R159 to R171 per m2
  • Twin cobble 50mm, grey: R150 to R162 per m2
  • Cottage paver 50mm, grey: R147 to R154 per m2
  • Interlocking paver 60mm, grey: R164 to R176 per m2
  • Interlocking paver 60mm, tan: R181 to R193 per m2

Buying by the pallet

Yards sell paving by the pallet, and the pallet rate is almost always cheaper per brick than buying loose.

  • 50mm bevel, 25MPa: 12 m2 or 600 bricks per pallet
  • 50mm bevel, SANS 1058 30MPa+: 12 m2 per pallet, around R1,400 to R1,870 including VAT
  • 60mm interlock, 25MPa: 10 m2 or 500 bricks per pallet, around R1,245
  • 80mm interlock: about 10.23 m2 or 486 bricks per pallet, around R2,730
  • Bevel bond, grey, per pallet: around R1,900 to R2,200 at some suppliers

A 10 m2 pallet at R1,245 is roughly R125 per m2, cheaper than the loose retail rate. The catch is that you take the whole pallet whether you need it or not. The pallet and coverage maths is worth doing before you order.

Grey versus coloured

Standard grey is always the cheapest option. Coloured pavers cost roughly R15 per m2 more on the published supply rates, though the retail per-brick gap can be far wider on premium colours such as red and tan.

Colour is also a durability question, not only a price one. Concrete pigment softens over the years under Cape Town’s UV, while clay brick keeps its colour permanently because the colour is the fired clay itself.

Thickness and where it matters

  • 50mm: patios, walkways, pool surrounds and light foot traffic
  • 60mm: the minimum for a residential driveway carrying cars
  • 80mm: heavy vehicles, commercial yards and municipal roads

Expect to pay about R20 per m2 more for every extra 10mm. On a 40 m2 driveway, upgrading from 50mm to 60mm is roughly R800 in material and removes the main cause of cracked pavers under a car’s wheels.

Delivery is a real cost

Pavers are heavy. A single pallet of 50mm bevels is roughly a tonne. Delivery within about 125km of the supplier runs R1,200 to R5,700 in total depending on distance and how many pallets go on the truck.

Order everything in one delivery if you can. Two half-loads cost meaningfully more than one full one, and the truck needs somewhere firm and reachable to offload. Paver strength classes and laying guidance come from the Concrete Manufacturers Association.

What installation adds to paving bricks prices

This is the number the retailer listings never give you. Brick supply is only 40 to 50 percent of an installed paving job.

  • Bricks: R120 to R200 per m2
  • Labour: R100 to R200 per m2
  • Bedding sand, cement and edging: R80 to R180 per m2
  • Installed total: R390 to R680 per m2

So a R165 per m2 brick becomes a R420 per m2 driveway once excavation, crusher run, compaction, edge restraints and laying are in. Our full paving prices guide sets out that build-up in detail.

Buying cheap paving bricks sensibly

  1. Check the strength rating. SANS 1058 at 25MPa or higher is the benchmark for driveways.
  2. Buy from one batch. Concrete colour varies between production runs and a patched-in pallet shows.
  3. Stick to grey in a standard shape if budget is tight. It is the cheapest per m2 and always in stock.
  4. Do not buy short. Add 5 percent for cuts and breakage before you order.

Very cheap end-of-range pallets can be good value, but check the MPa rating and confirm you can get matching stock if you run out. For patios and pool surrounds, compare against the 600×600 paving slabs price, which covers ground faster with far fewer joints. Frequently asked questions

How much is 500 paving bricks?

At R3.00 to R3.70 for standard grey 50mm units, 500 bricks costs roughly R1,500 to R1,850 at retail. Buying the same quantity as a pallet is usually cheaper — a 500-brick pallet of 60mm interlock is listed around R1,245 including VAT. Coloured bricks at R4.80 to R5.30 each push the same 500 to R2,400 or more.

How many square meters do 500 paving bricks cover?

About 10 square metres for standard 200 x 100 x 50mm bevel or interlocking pavers, which lay at roughly 48 to 50 bricks per square metre. Larger cottage pavers at 200 x 150 x 50mm cover more, around 15 square metres for 500 bricks, because you only need about 33 of them per square metre.

How much paving is in a pallet?

Usually 10 to 12 square metres. A 50mm bevel pallet typically holds 600 bricks and covers about 12 square metres, while a 60mm interlock pallet holds 500 bricks and covers about 10 square metres. Thicker 80mm pavers hold fewer per pallet, around 486 bricks for 10.23 square metres, because of the weight limit.

How much is brick paving per m2?

Supply only, about R150 to R190 per square metre for standard grey concrete pavers, rising to R265 for premium colours. Installed, clay brick paving runs R550 to R800 per square metre in the Western Cape in 2026, and concrete brick paving R380 to R650, because labour and base preparation make up more than half the job.

How much is 1000 paving bricks at Cashbuild?

Cashbuild lists grey plain pave bricks at 50mm around R3.65 each and 60mm grey interlocking pavers around R3.00, so 1,000 bricks works out to roughly R3,000 to R3,650. Coloured options such as bevel red at R5.30 take the same 1,000 bricks past R5,000. Prices vary by branch and stock, so confirm locally before ordering.
