Blocked Drains Cape Town: Causes, Cost & Fixes

A blocked drain Cape Town homeowners deal with usually costs between R450 and R900 for a simple sink or shower, and R1,500 to R4,000 when the main sewer line needs high-pressure jetting. The City cleared just over 90,000 sewer blockages in the 2025/26 financial year, and says most were preventable.

Here is what causes them, what you can safely try yourself, and where the City’s responsibility starts.

What actually causes a blocked drain Cape Town homes see

The cause tells you the fix, so it is worth knowing which one you have.

  • Fats, oils and grease. Poured down a kitchen sink warm, they cool and set on the pipe wall and slowly close it.
  • Rags and wet wipes. Flushed items do not break down. The City attributes roughly two-thirds of its recorded blockages to rags, sanitary products and other foreign objects.
  • Hair and soap build-up. The standard cause in showers and basins.
  • Tree roots. Roots find hairline cracks in older clay or earthenware sewer pipe and grow into the joint.
  • Sand and building rubble. Common after renovations, and a real problem in sandy coastal suburbs.
  • Collapsed or bellied pipe. Ground movement leaves a low point that never fully drains.

Reading the symptoms

  • One slow fixture usually means a local blockage in that trap or branch.
  • Several fixtures backing up at once points at the main line.
  • Gurgling when another fixture drains means air is trapped behind a partial blockage.
  • Sewage surfacing at the outside gully means the run to the connection is blocked.

What you can safely try yourself, and where to stop

Some blockages genuinely clear with ten minutes of effort.

  • Clear the visible hair and gunk from the plughole or shower trap.
  • Plunge properly: cover the overflow, seal the plug, and use firm repeated strokes.
  • Pour a kettle of hot (not boiling) water down a greasy kitchen drain.
  • Unscrew and clean the U-bend under a basin, with a bucket underneath.

Stop if sewage is surfacing, if more than one fixture is affected, or if the blockage returns within days. At that point you want a registered plumber rather than another weekend of plunging.

Repeated caustic drain cleaner is worth avoiding altogether. It can damage older pipework, it rarely touches roots or a collapsed section, and it makes the plumber’s job more hazardous when the pipe is finally opened.

Rodding versus jetting, and what each costs

These are the two main professional methods and they are not interchangeable.

  • Rodding or augering. A flexible rod or spring is pushed through to punch a hole in the blockage. Fast, cheaper, ideal for a soft local blockage. It clears the passage but leaves the pipe wall coated.
  • High-pressure water jetting. A jetting nozzle scours the full bore of the pipe, cutting grease and fine roots. More expensive, but it restores the pipe rather than just poking through it.
  • CCTV drain inspection. A camera survey that shows why the drain keeps blocking. Roughly R1,200 to R2,500 as a standalone service, and sometimes included when a bigger job is quoted.

Indicative 2026 Cape Town pricing looks like this:

  • Blocked sink, basin or shower: R450 to R900
  • Toilet or external gully: R750 to R1,500
  • Main sewer line or multiple drains, jetted: R1,500 to R4,000
  • General blocked drain cleaning range: around R660 to R2,750 and up
  • After hours and weekends: expect a premium on the call-out

Those figures sit alongside standard plumbing rates. If you want the wider rate card first, our plumber near me prices guide explains how quotes are built up.

When the blockage is the City’s problem, not yours

This matters, because paying privately for a municipal blockage is money thrown away.

  • Yours: everything from the fixture to your boundary connection — internal drains, gullies, inspection eyes and the private sewer run.
  • The City’s: the public sewer main, public stormwater pipes, catch pits, kerb inlets and public canals.

If sewage is surfacing in the street, at a manhole outside your boundary, or at several neighbouring properties at once, log it with the City’s water and sanitation service rather than calling a private plumber. Keep the reference number. If the City’s team finds the blockage is on your side, you will need a plumber anyway — but you will not have paid twice.

Keeping the drains clear

Prevention is dull and it works.

  • Never pour fat or cooking oil down the sink. Let it set and bin it.
  • Flush only what the body produced and toilet paper. Wet wipes labelled flushable are not.
  • Fit hair traps in showers and baths.
  • Sweep sand into the bin rather than hosing it into a drain.
  • Do not connect roof or paving stormwater into the sewer line.
  • Have the main line jetted every few years if you have mature trees or old clay pipe.

If a drain keeps blocking in the same place, the pipe itself is usually the problem and repeat rodding is just a subscription. Ask for a camera survey. To get a drain looked at, see our plumbing and electrical page, read how to vet someone in a hurry in our plumber Cape Town guide, or describe the problem to us and we will tell you what it is likely to take.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to unblock a drain in Cape Town?

A simple sink, basin or shower blockage runs about R450 to R900 using a hand auger or plunger. A toilet or outside gully is roughly R750 to R1,500. A blocked main sewer line needing high-pressure jetting sits between R1,500 and R4,000. Broader market guides quote R660 to R2,750 and up across all blocked drain work.

Who is responsible for a blocked drain in Cape Town?

You are responsible for everything from your fixtures up to your boundary connection, including internal drains, gullies and inspection eyes. The City is responsible for the public sewer main and the public stormwater network. If sewage is surfacing in the street or affecting several properties at once, log it with the City rather than paying a private plumber. Registration is verifiable: check any plumber against the Department of Employment and Labour before work starts.

What is the difference between drain rodding and jetting?

Rodding pushes a flexible rod through the blockage to open a passage. It is faster and cheaper but leaves the pipe wall coated. High-pressure jetting scours the full diameter, cutting grease and fine root growth, so it restores flow properly. Jetting costs more but a drain that keeps blocking usually needs it.

Can I use caustic drain cleaner on a blocked drain?

It is best avoided as a routine fix. Caustic products can damage older pipework, they rarely shift roots or a collapsed section, and residual chemical makes the job more hazardous for whoever opens the pipe afterwards. Try a proper plunge, hot water on a greasy kitchen drain, or clean the U-bend by hand instead.

Why does my drain keep blocking in the same place?

A repeat blockage in one spot usually means the pipe itself is at fault: root intrusion at a cracked joint, a bellied section that holds water, or a partial collapse. Repeated rodding only buys weeks. A CCTV drain inspection, roughly R1,200 to R2,500, shows the actual defect so you can fix it once.
