Driveway paving cost in Cape Town lands between R390 and R770 per square metre all in for 2026. A single driveway of about 40 square metres works out at R18,000 to R30,000 in cement pavers. A double driveway of 60 to 80 square metres runs R28,000 to R55,000, or up to R70,000 in clay brick or cobble.
This page is about numbers only. Below are two worked examples and the full per-square-metre build-up behind them.
Worked example one: single driveway, 40 m2
A typical single-car drive is about 3 metres wide and 13 metres long. Assume cement bevel pavers and normal ground.
- Excavation and cart away: R50 to R100 per m2 = R2,000 to R4,000
- Sub-base and compaction: R60 to R120 per m2 = R2,400 to R4,800
- Bedding sand layer: R30 to R50 per m2 = R1,200 to R2,000
- Pavers supplied: roughly R120 to R180 per m2 = R4,800 to R7,200
- Laying, jointing, compaction: R100 to R200 per m2 = R4,000 to R8,000
- Edge restraints: typically R2,000 to R4,000 on a drive this size
That totals roughly R18,000 to R30,000, which matches the published market range for a single drive in cement pavers.

Worked example two: double driveway, 70 m2
A double drive is usually 5 to 6 metres wide. It carries more traffic and turns, so the base spec goes up.
- Cement bevel pavers, 60mm: R28,000 to R55,000 total
- Clay brick or cobble: R45,000 to R70,000 total
- Natural stone: above R60,000 and often well beyond it
The jump from single to double is not simply double the money. The base work per square metre is the same, but material choice swings the total by tens of thousands of rand.
Where the extra rand goes on a double
- Turning circles cause more cutting and more waste
- Wider spans need more edge restraint metres
- Two-car loading justifies 80mm interlocking units over 50mm bevels
- Larger areas need proper falls designed in, not just eyeballed
The driveway paving cost build-up per square metre
Every honest quote can be split into five layers. If a quote gives you one number with no breakdown, ask for these.
- Excavation and earthworks: R50 to R100 per m2
- Sub-base layer and compaction: R60 to R120 per m2
- Bedding sand: R30 to R50 per m2
- Laying, jointing and final compaction: R100 to R200 per m2
- Paver supply: R120 to R500 per m2 depending on the unit
Base work alone accounts for R140 to R270 per square metre before a single paver is laid. That is why a R150 per square metre “special” cannot include a real base.
Excavation depth changes the price
- Pedestrian paths: about 150mm of excavation
- Vehicle driveways: 250mm to 300mm of excavation
- Poor or clay ground: deeper still, plus more material to cart away
Cape Town has everything from stable sand in the Northern Suburbs to soft, wet ground near the vlei areas. The site survey is what turns a range into a real driveway paving cost figure.
Material rates side by side
- Cement bevel pavers, 50mm: R380 to R550 per m2 installed
- Interlocking pavers, 60mm to 80mm: R420 to R680 per m2 installed
- Simulated cobble: R500 to R880 per m2 installed
- Clay brick pavers: R550 to R800 per m2 installed
- Natural stone or flagstone: R850 to R1,500 per m2 installed
For a driveway, interlocking 60mm to 80mm units are usually the best value. They spread wheel loads better than a plain square unit at a modest premium. Our pavers Cape Town guide compares thicknesses in detail.
Costs people forget to budget
- Removing an old surface: breaking up concrete adds cost and rubble removal
- Stormwater and channels: needed where water would otherwise run at a garage door
- Kerbs and steps at the street boundary
- Wastage: add roughly 10 percent on paver quantities for cuts and breakage
- Delivery minimums: many suppliers only deliver orders above R3,000
Ask whether each of those sits inside or outside the quoted figure. That single question removes most billing surprises later. Paver strength classes and laying guidance come from the Concrete Manufacturers Association.
Getting an accurate number for your drive
Measure the length and width, note the existing surface and note where the water currently runs. With those three things a contractor can quote closely without guessing.
If you are choosing materials rather than budgeting, compare cobble paving Cape Town options against brick first, or read the paving suppliers Cape Town guide before ordering anything yourself.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to pave a driveway in South Africa?
Between R390 and R770 per square metre all in for 2026, covering materials, excavation, sub-base preparation and labour. A single driveway of about 40 square metres comes to R18,000 to R30,000 in cement pavers, while a double driveway of 60 to 80 square metres runs R28,000 to R55,000.
How much does a double driveway cost to pave?
A double driveway of 60 to 80 square metres costs R28,000 to R55,000 in cement pavers, or R45,000 to R70,000 in clay brick or cobble. Natural stone pushes past R60,000. The base work costs the same per square metre either way, so the material choice is what swings the total.
What is included in a paving quote?
A proper quote splits into five layers: excavation at R50 to R100 per square metre, sub-base and compaction at R60 to R120, bedding sand at R30 to R50, laying and jointing at R100 to R200, and the pavers themselves. If you get one lump number with no breakdown, ask for these separately.
How deep should a driveway be excavated for paving?
250mm to 300mm for a vehicle driveway, against about 150mm for a pedestrian path. If a contractor plans to lay pavers straight onto existing ground without excavating, the surface will rut and sink under a car. Poor or clay ground needs to be dug deeper still.
Why are some paving quotes so much cheaper?
Because they skip the base. Excavation, sub-base and bedding alone cost R140 to R270 per square metre before any paver is laid, so a quote near R150 per square metre cannot include real ground preparation. Those jobs typically sink or wave within a season or two of winter rain.
